Palace Brothers from Louisville, KY.
The song is based on the Scottish traditional Loch Tay Boat Song.
If you liked this, there is lots more to discover from Palace, Will Oldham and Bonnie Prince Billy.

This is a great song, don't get me wrong. But I prefer the high energy bluegrass version on Funtown Comedown. Absolutely killer. If you haven't heard it, I'd recommend it.

@TheAtlantissg1 You're right, it is better. For one thing, it has the "stream/seem" internal rhyme. Although I kind of like "wee folk". It would be cool if it were "sidhe" because then you'd have an additional reinforcement of the alliteration/rhyme scheme. It's a tongue-twister!

@roesmoker That sites lyrics are incorrect. "Her eyes are like the gleam O' the sunlight on the stream; And the songs the fairies sing Seem like songs she sings at milking". This is a correct verse of the original which as you can appreciate is much superior to this offering from that website: "And her dance is like the gleam of the sunlight on the stream And the songs the wee folk sing, they're the songs she sings at milking".

PS in the original, Catarina was "nighean ruadh" which means "red-haired girl" in Gaelic. And "the whole day through" was "hori ho" which is a Scots phrase meaning lamenting or sorrow.

The other version is dead to me, sacrilege to the memory of this one.
There is an interesting comparison of the lyrics to Loch Tay and Ohio but stupid YouTube won't let me post it. Google "ohio river boat song loch tay" and it's the first result.
The bit about the blue jays screeching is the best, SO much better than the original. All the alliteration, it kills me with the genius.
Will will always be Palace to me too.

@georgiasamas Please never take this down. This is the only place I can find this version of the song and it moves me to tears every time I hear it.

Thanks for posting this. Likely most footage was shot in b/w in spring '93, in part, at Churchill Downs. I remember Will schlepping a camera around in the week before the Derby -- and the single had just come out: I think it was the last Saturday in April PB played their first show, opening for Big Star reunion in Columbia (Ky. Derby = 1st Saturday in May.)
