If you have problems, the Math Doctor has answers! This 55-minute parody of a call-in radio show is actually a math workshop for grades 3-8. When you learn more about it we think you'll agree learning math was never this much fun! Students don't even realize how much academic content they are learning as they laugh their way through this rich learning experience. Students and parents are asked to play along as the The Math-a-Phobia Hotline radio show is broadcast "on location" from their school. The workshop storyline features the Hotline's host, the Math Doctor, who offers callers advice on how they can solve their real-world problems with mathematics. Students and/or family participants compute mathematical calculations in their own copies of "School Daze" (a mock student newspaper) as they take an active part in the show and ultimately save the day with math.
Teachers and/or families can capitalize on the high-interest this workshop creates for students by following the post-workshop plan that includes reading and writing activities using the School Daze newspaper.
To host this family engagement worksop or school assembly at your school, you will need a Math-a-Phobia Hotline CD, Production Guide, and copies of the School Daze newspaper for your audience. This program package is available for purchase at www.workshops-in-a-box.com. Who is the next caller?
Our newest Workshop-in-a-Box was so much fun for me to write, but it's even more rewarding to see teachers having such a good time putting it on for their families. I love the school staff at the elementary school featured in this promo video. They are super positive and doing great things for children!
