@moondrip63 What spiritual lessons, precisely are unique to, or even attributable to the 12-step approach? Mike BD

@moondrip63 So you aren't a loyal 12-step adherent. Got it. Still, the idea of inventing a God of one's liking strikes me as grandiose and egocentric. How about grape Flavor-ade? Mike BD

@moondrip63 I'm not arguing that steppism is a cult, merely rebutting the inaccurate assertions you made. Mike BD

@blamethenile I am not at all unaware of the governing body of AA in NY or of NA in CA. No matter what kind of corruption might take place at those levels, it still comes no where near equaling "CULT." My thesis for my degree was on cults, and sorry, 12 step groups don't come close to qualifying.

@paintersstone Yes, terrible stuff there. :) You know, there was a time when I thought the 12 steps were bullshit. I thought I was so beyond needing some stupid list of steps to find to spiritual enlightment. I have found that 12 step programs nothing like what is described throughout so many of these comments. It has been years since I actually "worked a step" formally. I now just live my life in accordance with the spiritual lessons I gleaned from "working" those steps early on.

@blamethenile LOL, why is having a personal concept of God grandiose and egocentric? Seems to me that forcing one's concept of God on anyone else is what is grandiose and egocentric! In my 15 years clean I have attended a lot of meetings, but I've also had long periods of time where I didn't go to any meetings at all. I rarely pray (for I don't believe in anything that actually can do anything about an individual's prayer) and I don't meditate. And I hate Koolade.

Yeah... Looking at the shitty things you've done in your life and having someone sit with you to help you identify your personal defects so you can work on them and start to have healthy relationships is a TERRIBLE thing. So is twelve step work. Helping people and offering your services to the Salvation Army every few Saturdays or helping a drunk through a withdrawal is probably the worst thing you could ever do. roflcopter.

@moondrip63 God can be anything you like (seems a bit grandiose and egocentric), as long as it keeps you going to meetings, praying, meditating and seeking knowledge of its will as revealed through group conscience, and otherwise drinking the Koolade. Mike BD
