Apple Sculpture
For full information clik on "more info" above.
Apple Sculpture is a Craft that was practised by settlers in Canada in the 19th Century. Apples would be taken from the food store on those long winter nights, carved and set on the mantle shelf over a log fire, and allowed to dry over a few weeks with surprising and sometimes quite scary results.

ONLY Golden Delicious Apples can be used, as the flesh has special qualities that allow it to shrink without collapsing. When carving the apple, do not cut too much material off, as it will shrink to about one half to one third the size. Remember that if you want a part to protrude, maybe lips or eyebrows, you must cut around the area and remove that in order that they remain proud of the surface. The eyes and mouth will open wider, the deeper you make the knife incision.

When drying them, impale them on a wooden barbecue stick, and do not allow them to touch each other as they will go rotten in a day or so at the point of contact. Allow air to circulate all around them.

Teeth are added using cut down cocktail sticks, squaring off one end, and using the sharp end to push in to the apple using tweezers. Clothes can be made using brown paper which can then be varnished. Hands can be carved from discarded chunks of apple, and can be very realistic.

The Apple Sculpture at the top left in the final shot is over 8 years old. Keep them dry and although they may darken up a bit, they will only rot if allowed to get damp.
