What is magic whit? Is it the same thing as Gesso?
ValleyMermaid 3 months ago
@ValleyMermaid Magic white is a thin oil paint that is used as a base coat for wet on wet painting. Gesso is an acrylic or chalk mixture that is used to prepare the surface of the canvas. Similar to how you would sand a piece of wood before applying stain. Magic White makes the canvas tacky so it can receive paint, and allows mixing of colors directly on the canvas.

@PandawdyBob So, would you use White Magic if you are working with Acrylic paints? Thanks for answering me! Can't you just buy a canvas that has already been prepped with Gesso?
ValleyMermaid 3 months ago
@ValleyMermaid Most retail canvases are already prepped with gesso. Gesso is only used to make a canvas usable. If you ever stretch your own canvas, you'll see why it's necessary to prep it with gesso. It would be almost impossible to paint on a raw canvas. Once it's prepped with gesso and dry, it's ready for Magic White. Magic White slickens the surface so paints will go on easier. So you need double primed canvas, and Magic White for Bill's wet on wet method.

@PandawdyBob Thank you :)! But just so I am clear, you don't use Magic White for Acrylics?
ValleyMermaid 3 months ago
@ValleyMermaid No. Oil paints generally will not mix with anything but other oil paints. Oils can be applied on top of dry gesso. But gesso or acrylic paints should not be applied on top of oil paints.
