The Life of Akilah Kelly...Kelly, who lived with her family in North Richmond, was in a car with Eboni Barbray-Jean Webb, which lost control on Interstate 80 in Vacaville and hit a tree, killing both of the young women.
Kelly was a 2010 graduate of El Cerrito High School and had just started classes at Berkeley City College with plans to work as a paraprofessional for the special education department of the West Contra Costa School district. Her activities during high school had included playing softball and being a Gaucho cheerleader. She was also involved at the Jewels Cheer Gyms program in Richmond and ran track for the Hilltop Speed team.
Kelly was also active with the Oakland-based organization Black Women Organized for Political Action.
An online memorial page for Kelly, who would have turned 19 on March 23, has been set up on Facebook at http://on.fb.me/eiRvPd.
Her family is grateful for any assistance the community can offer. An Akilah Kelly Memorial Fund has been set up at the Town Center branch of Mechanics Bank at 20 San Pablo Town Center, San Pablo, CA 94806. Donations to the fund can also be made at any Mechanics Bank branch by May 10, 2011.
