The open source MySQL database is set to decline if Oracle successfully merges with Sun Microsystems.
According to new data released by analyst firm The 451 Group over 8o per cent use MySQL today, but that will drop to around 72 percent by 2014.
Fifteen percent say that if Oracle buys Sun, they would be less inclined to use MySQL.
Oracle announced plans to buy Sun in April, but European regulators have slowed down the £7bn deal with an anti-competitive investigation.
But it's also been argued that MySQL and Oracle's own database aren't direct competitors, meaning Oracle would have little reason to stifle it.
