the very best rendition of this song I have ever heard
-
it WAS sang by the actor Erland Van Lidth De Jeude

I thought it was Gene Wilder dubbing grossbergers lip-syncing. But I read that the guy who played Grossberger was ACTUALLY singing!

His actual voice wasn't used for the song, "Down in the Valley", in the film. Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike in 1980, he wasn't able to record the song himself, so they used the pre-recorded track to which he had sung the song during the filming in the final print of the movie
Interesting how a good comedy film filled with funny humor with a sort of madcap tone to it suddenly and unexpectedly turns depressingly serious and reflective at this moment without any warning at all. Grossburger's character is a violent and unpredictable pschyopath who you'd better not turn your back on; but he suddenly demonstrates that he is both a heartfelt and lonely man who is obviously home-sick. I'm sure a lot of men cry at night behind bars because jail is all they have in life.
