A group of the same volunteers that cared for these patients @ Jimani then visited them @ Hospital Universitario Dario Contreras (in Santo Domingo). The conditions at Hospital Dario Contreras are definitely not what our group of international volunteers were expecting when they heard the patients were being transferred to an "University Hospital".
Adequate postoperative care for these patients is essential in order to allow for recovery and minimize the risk of preventable death. The Dominican healthcare system is being stressed with this challenge; we are a thirld world country and these patients have received first world surgery at field hospitals near the border. Our hospitals (even in major cities) lack the supplies, equipment and trained staff to properly care for these patients.
