  • If anyone wants to get a handle on how this man thought in musical terms, this is a piece they might study, as it is a remarkable example of Schoenberg's mastery of counterpoint. This is not merely a setting of an old German Christmas carol (written by Praetorius), as he manages to work in Silent Night as a counter-melody (at around 4;00). Variation, contrapuntal treatment of motives, a marvelous ear for orchestration, all mark him as far more of a traditionalist than a fiery revolutionary.

  • The great Arnold Schoenberg! His spirit is alive in the music and books he wrote. Only a great soul can let the legacy that he did!

  • This piece always makes me cry. I think of looking at my Christmas tree in the dark, remembering my childhood and the magic of Christmas Eve, the people who are gone who made my life wonderful, and always, spending time with my family surrounded by warmth and love. Schoenberg was a brilliant composer and a man who obviously loved his family enough to write such beautiful music.

  • Sent here for an example of fine Christmas music, and glad I came, though would have needed 10,000 guesses to imagine the composer of such a piece !

    Happy Christmas 2011.

  • just beautiful. reminds me of one of bachs most beautiful preludes, fuges ... what else. WONDERFUL DONE, SCHOENBERG =)

  • Arnold Schönbergs soft and tender nature as a human being are often not seen because of the dramatic gesture of his music. I've studied a lot of his music and also his personal life and he seemed to be one of the most amazing and inspiring people ever.

I guess it's like in literature "a good author tells you a story. a bad author tells you about himself."

  • good stuff arnold

  • What's great about this piece is that it's so clearly written by the same man who wrote the book of hanging gardens....

  • @Varese52 Thanks for the tip

  • @MrNoelJMIS 9 years after Pierrot lunaire, right while he was devising his 12-tone technique at the absolute peak of what you might call his "insanity" =D

  • Wunderschön*_*
