James Kalm has been a fan of Dave Hickey for years. The polemical Hickey has received a MacArthur Genius Grant, and used his ideas and prestige to establish a creative enclave at the University of Nevada at Los Vegas. Hes a provocative commentator on contemporary art, an essayist delving into deconstructivist theory, and a correspondent chronicling the American scene who melds the breadth of Mark Twain with the ultra-hipness of Hunter S. Thomson. This lecture was delivered at the School of Visual Arts September 17, 2009. Part four of four.

  • James, I just read your blog on No country for Old Men, just wanted to add my Texan pedigree as my grandfather, mother and father went to University of Texas. My mother's family on the other hand is all from the Appalachians. where are his kin from?

  • Austin?

  • Dear Viewers,

James Kalm has been contacted by Michael Grant, Director of Communications at the School of Visual Arts, and he requests that this series of Dave Hickey videos be removed. Please post a comment, your recommendation, or let Mr. Grant know your feeling regarding this mater,

    thanks,

    James Kalm

  • Well to begin with his talk's title was the God Ennui, not the Good Ennui, but, hey, what difference does a little stray letter, make, right?

  • Dear dominicue,

I plead guilty as charged. I shouldn't be allowed with in twenty feet of a keyboard with out editors strapped to both hands. Let me see if I can correct this with out taking the whole vid down. Sorry.

  • This is hard because, I feel like Dave Hickey is an institutional name. If we fully listen to him, we just fall under the institution of Mr. Hickey.

  • While you might "fully listen to him" I don't think Dave would want you to blindly follow him. He does question the academic institutions from a very knowing perspective., and after all he's a certified "genius".

  • Hickey is the art world's Sam Kinisin. I enjoy the 'I am old and therefore don't know about those youngsters' bit. "I know that I'm clueless". Very approachable and entertaining ways of looking at art.

  • Mr. Hickey makes some VERY valid points on contentment and macroeconomics in his lecture. Dave is also hilarious. I am quite positive that more than a few of his remarks were the catalysts for sphincter-clenching by some of the button-down attendees;)

  • Good....

  • thanks for doing what you do, james!

  • This is the last time I promise ! - my Jewish stepfather also went to UT-Austin on an Army scholarship for a Master's in Military History in the late sixties.

  • Where is your blog please?

  • Great lecture series. I am glad I came accross these. Thanks James.

  • James - I hope you resist the requests/demands by SVA to take this vid down. You are providing a valuable service to the art community. Many thanks for this !

  • Yes, Austin - where I lved and worked at Watson & Co Books next to the Sweetish Hill Restaurant famous for its Mimosa Brunches. And I know what Ann Richards would have said to the young women she always came into the store with re: the question the young woman asked about men and power, and Hickey's answer - I say he would have gotten much further in Nashville expressing those sentiments in the great tradition of country lyric.
