ANCHOR:
On April 26, 1986, reactor number four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine exploded. Thousands of lives were lost in a nuclear meltdown that sent highly radioactive fallout into the atmosphere across international borders. It is not the disaster itself that Russians talk about most, but the slow process of recovering. Our correspondents from Saint Petersburg have more details.
STORY:
Residents of Saint Petersburg gathered at the Victims of Radiation Catastrophes monument last Saturday to commemorate those who died during the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant explosion. 22 years later this catastrophe is still having an impact on people's lives and health.
[Mr Kuleshov, Mine Worker]: male
"I am cutter, mine worker. We were near the reactor at that time. This was a very hard time, terrible, my friends died. I was there for 14 days and became disabled. Sometimes I have to get my benefits through the court."

The Chernobyl plant explosion was the worst nuclear disaster of the 20th century, yet Russian citizens learned about the explosion only three weeks after the fact from then Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachov.
These days, most people affected by Chernobyl care more about the impact rather than the cause of the tragedy. Their lives are divided into two parts: before the explosion and after the explosion.
[Mr Kuleshov, Mine Worker]: male
"I want to wish everyone health and courage. You shouldn't be scared. I wish everything good to all those living, and an imperishable memory of those who died."
More than half a million people have been affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and most of them are in poor health.
