Stage 8.3 theme.

This video marks the end of my involvement in the Touhou scene.

I just gradually found myself not caring about any characters and stories anymore. Now, that wouldn't be too bad, as I still like the music, but all the circles only seem to arrange themes in relation to characters. Themes from side games or music CDs are neglected and declared as obscure, no matter how they sound like. But why?

Shouldn't there be enough arranges of TH06/07/08 now? Or do the fans really want to hear an infinite number of Septette arranges? I'm just not that kind of person who can feed off the nostalgia of the early games forever. The fanbase doesn't provide a change, and ZUN doesn't either. I don't even enjoy the games that much anymore, reaching an all-time low with the Ten Desires trial.


With my BGM-related tools, I worked my way up to the top of the fanbase, yeah. But I really question this position now as most of the fanbase continues to slap my face, in turn leading to me spraying hate across image boards. Nice guys are few and far between, and know who they are.

It's a vicious cycle of people not caring for each other. Add to that a number of bad decisions on my part that contributed to that mess, and you should understand my decision.

Still, I won't deny that Touhou was the single best fanbase I had ever been part of, but at the end, it's just not the right one for me.

Anyway, on to the music.

This arrangement was started back in February 2009 to capture the nostalgic atmosphere Lotus Land Story had to me. I envisioned something really great and epic. But apparently, I lack both the skill and the workflow to actually finish something like this in a reasonable time, and thus, it remains unfinished to this day.

And even though this is supposed to be part of a game soundtrack in the future, it will stay this way for quite some time.

I decided against spoiling the context in which this track is supposed to be played. I wonder if someone will get it through the music alone.


... You know what's worst? Doing mediocre music.

If it's bad, then the track has mostly at least comic value, and people will laugh about it. Or dislike the video, which is indeed a very powerful way to voice your criticism without writing anything. :-)

And if it's good, people may end up regularly listening to the song. That is my aim.

But if it's mediocre, people only thumb it up, maybe post the redundant "Awesome!!11 xD" comment and leave. And even if they download the song, they maybe listen to it once or twice and then forget it.

And too many arranges unavoidably create a pool of mediocre stuff.

Well, at least I will regularly listen to this one.

Wow, you have totally opened a new door to me. Totally worthy the subscription. I had no idea the situation was that bad. Anyway, I have never been a fan of fandoms, and even though I am active in two or tree at the time, I always act as the "outsider" after making a few friends.

What Touhou needs is AWESOME PEOPLE. But oh... They all went off to the My Little Pony fandom! Which did everything right from the start.

Anyway, if the best thing I can do for now is to avoid arranging touhou stuff, then that's what I'm going to do.

If you want to make arranges, then do it well. Look at which arranges exist, and make something special.

Ideally, that would be a vocal arrange in a non-Japanese language of something obscure (Seihou, ZUN's Strange Works, related games, or rare PC-98/side game/music CD themes).

Bonus points for lyrics about how much the fandom sucks.

And don't upload them now. Wait for Distant Phantasm's 3rd move, and submit them there. You want to reach the fans, don't you?

It feels like I'm reading my own feelings exactly on this matter, since I went through something all too similar. Shame on those who label you for being "emo" without taking your perspective to heart, having seen the things you saw. Just goes to show that your points are absolutely correct.

I also understand why ZUN stopped including MIDIs along with the recorded wavs - too many "musicians" these days are just copypasting segments to capitalize on ZUN's work.

You´ve stated your opinion, which is absolutely nothing bad, if people can´t accept it and want to consider themselves satisfied with stereotype stuff, it´s their problem.

@NamelessLegacy Well going down the hard lane learning how to play instruments has it's own benefits. Such as..... you can just play the songs to your friends instead of playing it through your phone and claim that it's yours, anyone can just do that.

And about that popularity... Well it just depends on how good that arrangement is. It already has the X-factor (Am I using the word right? @_@), so you just have to make it awesome to make it greater. Otherwise it's just a lame song.

@ToL1337 @GrtrThnClnD I might add that is probably seems easier and more motivating for many to just pirate FL Studio and immediately start producing something sounding halfway decent, especially with the help of MIDI files and the countless tutorials out there. Compare that with having to sit down, learn to play an instrument and then recording it properly.

And about popularity: Wouldn't an arrange get even more popularity if it were one of only a few arrangements of a certain source?
