One of my most favorite places on Earth:

I lose myself every time I visit Tent Rocks. Walking through the slot canyon stirs me to life and instills ancient wisdom and magic. The stone has stood millions of years and I feel it's sacred antiquity when I pass between it's walls.

This national monument is located on the Pajarito Plateau in north-central New Mexico, and is roughly 5,570 feet to 6,760 feet above sea level. The cone-shaped or "tent rock" formations are the result of volcanic eruptions that occurred 6 to 7 million years ago and left pumice, ash and tuff deposits over 1,000 feet thick. Atop many of the tapering stone columns are boulder caps that protect the softer pumice and tuff below. Some columns have lost their caps and are slowly disintegrating, returning to Mother Earth.

  • I live in Albuquerque and have never heard of these until now that I am doing a geology report for a class I'm taking at UNM. :) WOW!

  • @juliewb22 - Yes, Julie, they are STUNNING, am absolute MUST SEE! So glad you are close and can see them. Must be fun to understand the geology of the area. I am going to have to research it more online. Although not a geologist, I love geology!! :) Good luck with the report! :) Robin
