The video tells the story of the exploration of the lost canal and tunnel beneath Manchester in the 1970s. If you are interested in seeing more, the original images, and others not used in the presentation can be seen on my website www.heritagephotoarchive.co.uk which also contains 1000s of other heritage images of the North West of England, Cumbria and the Lakes, and North Wales. • Yes, Keith used a great deal of my research material. KH

  • Only one tunnel was completed. Various things have been suggested for the tunnel from nightclub to 'an underground experience'. The tramway route is already established on the surface and unfortunately the canal tunnel goes in the wrong direction. The biggest problem is that the tunnel in its lower levels floods. KH

  • Love it. Very interesting, found some interesting areas working as an apprentice in Manchester (very nosey) under the old Royal infirmary..

  • Thanks for posting this video.

I've got a book called Underground Manchester by Keith Warrender which has a section about the canal in it....this video has made the book so much clearer.

  • I have been down here on the underground Manchester tour and it is a fascinating experience, in your pics it shows the dock full of water but it is fully drained now except at the far end just before Granada Studios.

The tour cost just £12.00 and lasts about 2 hours but it was well worth the money.

The steps in your pics which lead to the surface are in a terrible state now and are starting to erode but the feeling of people running up and down these steps during an air raid is very real.

  • Great vid! The underground dock is amazing.

I got a bit lost with the maps. Which is the new canal tunnel as there are two? Can this be used as tram tunnel in any way, as it runs under the GMex. Taking trams under the centre on manchester must a bonus.

  • id like to find something like that

  • If it were me, I would clear out the tunnels and re flood them and make a tourist attraction by giving tourists rides through them, giving them the history of the times..

I love this sort of stuff.. Thanks for the video.

  • Nice small documentary! It's a shame that these sort of great builds are almost gone.

  • A Great "Mini programme." Youtube at it's best. Thank you.
