Indeed, I too am deeply in awe of Vaughan Williams' music, and The Lark Ascending would have fitted quite appropriately, however Delibes' Sylvia sounds very well with this one. To stick to Vaughan Williams the second movement of his sixth symphony could also have matched perfectly, the obstinate (and semantically emasculated) "rat-a-tat", reminding the sound of the machine gun, or (and semantically again) a tit for a tat! ;)
