John Deere model 80 diesel tractor starting procedure. The JD 80, 820 and 830 were the largest two cylinder Diesel tractors made by the John Deere Company. The 80 was made in 1955 and 1956. The tractor is started using a small high revving v4 "pony" motor which turns the big diesel over. Video shot May 30th 2009 at the North Carolina Agfest at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, NC.

  • dont start it this way kids. keep the diesel throttle back until compression and it has oil pressure. youcan still get operating manuels they will tell you

  • I agree 100% It's the way we've always started our 720 Diesel. Doing it like this guy does loads the cylinders up with fuel, and can hydrolock it, or let it pop off backwards.

  • starting it this way will not hurt it! we have 2 730 diesels that are started this same way. one has been in the family since new and has never been over hauled runs like a top. the other was over hauled bout 10 years ago from worn rings from not keeping up of air filter service from past owners. they wont hyrdo lock. do you know how much fuel it would take to hydro lock an engine this large lol fuel wont wash down cylinders, diesel is oil, gasoline will though, this will not hurt them at all

  • wow nice looking tractor

    awesome

  • I agree with the 'fuel off while cranking' in principle, but this was probably not the first time that has been started on that day. I've never experienced problems with having the fuel on while cranking regardless of how long it sat.

  • Interesting and sensible about the pony motor. The rest I don't know enough about to comment.

  • @ernie27177 You are dead right!! DO NOT advance the throttle until everthing is ready for the big engine to start. See, "John Deere 730 Diesel Tractor Start Up (pony engine)", for the correct way. JS

  • Thats how its done on many Russian tractors, in the extreme colds of Siberia its better. You get to warm the engine before you start it, and theres no worry about frozen batteries.

  • @MattytheDem True, very true.

  • @RustyCarnahan this guy is right about the pony motor tho

  • love the sound of the diesel engine, thump thump thump IT SOUNDS GREAT!!!!

  • does your tach work?
