As she considered a veto, Gov. Bev Perdue met with educators and leaders from across the state to hear first-hand what the legislature's budget means for our future.
@lilprince4life , A very good point and well said. Thanks for not making this a political battle as this is not one for me. As Americans first and North Carolinians secondly, we all should want the best for our Nation and State. I have a son in and I hate the thought of any school system taking a hit in the wallet. I just think that we have to start balancing goverment budgets and stop denying that over-spending is problem that will just take care of itself. I plan to volunteer more time to help
@BARRY0619 NC never outspends the budget. It is not allowed.
We are not broke--if we just extended the 1-cent sales tax increase, which most North Carolinians say in polls has not affected them much, we could afford the level of education we currently provide.
The truth is, someone will have to sacrifice in this budget. Why not extend that sacrifice fairly and equally among all citizens with the sales tax, rather than focusing it on our children and our future?
@69Datsun240Z Thank you for this wonderful comment. Tea Partiers often use Jefferson as an icon for limited government. But he would not approve of how far their insanity has gone.
@Engineshow We don't even need a further tax increase, we could keep the 1-cent addition to the sales tax that we have had and that would help a lot! But the GOP insists on lowering taxes so that we can't afford to pay for things like educating our children. Polls have shown that more North Carolinians would preserve education than eliminate a penny from the sales tax.
Why not spread out the pain with a sales tax rather than focus it on our kids?
The bottom line (if you can find it) is that the great state of NC is likely in the worst financial shape seen in decades. Our governor (and president) continues to spend us into oblivion with no end in sight. Time for a change!
Throwing our tax money is not the answer to better education. North Carolina children rank 43rd in the nation on test scores. The GOP legislature has specified that the $4,800 per student must be directed to the class rooms and cuts must be made with fewer administration and unnecessary expenses. The Democrat's caused the state deficit, and now the GOP must fix the problem. Governor Perdue will be a one term governor!
it is impossible to reverse all the spending damage the democrats have done to this state over the past 60 years. This budget is one small step in the right direction to mend our economy. Gov. Perdue, like Barack Obama, a one term wonder.
