what do anntentionuators do? i don't think i spelt it right but its the truck with the stripes on the back.

Attenuators, also called crash attenuators or crash cushions, provide a physical block in the lane closure that in theory prevents motorists from simply driving thru the set-up. The actual attenuator itself is designed to cushion a severe crash from behind (and they DO get hit), thereby saving the lives of the workers present on the job site.
