My point is that your objection was a bit naive: the problem of radiation applies to all ideas of spaceflight, not simply the space elevator idea. There are lots of ideas being worked on, and there'll be more in the future. Also, the space elevator isn't a single, fixed-length idea - there are various designs. What we use depends on what we want to do. Check Wikipedia.

@Candidfox Dude, are you from another planet??? stop the movie at 0:32, and look at the distance from the earth! the amount of solar radiation is very high there; and that makes long-term survival very unlikely. The ISS, on the other hand, orbits very close to Earth, and the main reason is to be shielded from radiation...

Oh, BTW -- the Space Elevator was dreamed up by the same SF writer who gave us the loony idea - which he didn't patent, thank goodness - of the geostationary communications satellite ... ... Arthur C. Clarke.

ok, and, once you make it there, how are you going to protect yourself from the sun's radiation ??? on earth, we are protected, due to the magnetic field... in space, you are naked in from of radiation! and, one more thing: people are trying to build a space elevator for 40 years. Since they haven't made it yet, what makes you think they are so close do do it ???
