Finally at the 3rd attempt,I found the elusive "Witches Cauldron"The evening before 2 other kayakers told us it wasn't very good! so Stephen wasn't keen, but I knew different having seen photo's on another blog.
I had been past it twice previously and thought that I had been in it,and I wasn't too impressed by what I thought it was!! Having said that the surrounding area is absolutely fantastic, the trip from Poppit Sands is just amazing,it is surely the most spectacular section of the whole Welsh coast, the contorted, folded cliffs, caves, and arches are really special,
To find the "Witches Cauldron" head towards Newport after Ceibwr Bay to the next place where you could possibly land(it would be tricky) about a mile, the cliffs drop to about sea level. Now turn back, hugging the cliffs and go into the first gully where you will see the entrance 100yds is too far,if it sounds easy wait till you try,the whole area is gullies, caves e.t.c. it is very easy to miss.
At high water springs I have been told access would be very difficult,so be careful - a rising spring tide could trap you in!!! At low water springs the narrow cave you see us enter, dries out and is even More amazing to explore on foot, splitting into three!! I think it is an amazing place, and feel that the people who dont rate it haven't found it!!!! You decide and tell me what you think.

  • would love to kayak around here but am a bit nervous as I,ve only ventured on the local river. Any tips and advice - cos I feel like I,m missing out on.

  • @Monsoonsue Best tip.......choose a calm day, ha ha, I do. Like a lot of things, there's more to it than meets the eye. If you're serious, I'd reccomend lessons, cost you a bit, but speed up the process. Choice of boat is essential, if you're not too serious a good Sit On Top, or a wide stable Sit In. You don't have to be Uber Kayaker to have a great time, and you have on your doorstep many great places to paddle, from dead easy, to very advanced, and a wonderful choice inbetween.

  • @Monsoonsue Best tip of all would be......try before You buy, a lot of boats look great, and indeed are, but may be unsuitable, uncomfortable, e.t.c. It needs to be comfortable, if you plan sitting in it all day......also, make sure it has watertight compartments, so that if you take a swim, the boat will still float.....some boats are completely open beneath decks, and if You flood them, they fill completely, and lose all bouyancy = bye bye boat, hello Lifeboat.

  • wow - would love to see more vids of your kayaking adventures ! - Solva is lovely and such a pretty little harbour. You might bump into me ( literally) swimming in the witches cauldron this summer lol - I'll keep an eye out for you : )

  • @Monsoonsue Indeed, I've seen a few people swimming at Ceibwr Bay, and the area seems popular with Coasteering types. In fact, whatever your interest, walking, swimming, boating, whatever, it's superb. The view, from the coastal path above Ceibwr Bay, looking back to Camaes Head is one of THE views in Wales.

  • thanks for some great advice - much prefer a sit-on anyway - they sell loads of Kayaks in Cardigan in our home town and I'm sure i can sort out some lessons (a must ) - quite exited now and looking forward to the Summer.

  • @Monsoonsue A "Monsoon",where I live is a local Lad just before he's 21.................

  • @Monsoonsue ROOOBBEE DOO........ go out and get lots of tickets....NOW, ha ha. I'll be back down there don't you worry. I now have a HD camcorder, and have just done a trip around Puffin Island, Anglesey, and it was absolutely stunning. Problem is, my computer can't cope with HD and needs upgrading, so it may be a few weeks off, but it will be worth watching, I can assure you. My last trip down mid Wales was fabulous, the Solva trip is another must, and very easy to do.

  • @GBPaddling hello there - Pembrokeshire is stunning ! hope you come back ! x If I win the Lotto I'll buy you a house here so can stay often lol x

  • @stebuses This trip is an absolute must, best from Poppit Sands, I've also done it from Newport Sands, which is also good. More often than not, you won't see anybody else out there, bar a few walkers on hte coast path. The launch at Ceibwr Bay is nearest, but at low water is a weed covered boulder ankle breaker, besides the rock architecture around Cemaes Head is second to none, and there are usually a lot of seals as well.
