Valamo (or Valaam) situated on an island in Lake Ladoga was the most important monastery of the Finnish Orthodox Church. Shortly after this documentary was made, war broke out between Finland and the Soviet Union (The Winter War): The monastery was evacuated. 150 monks settled in Heinävesi in Finland and founded the New Valamo monastery. Due to the war Finland lost the Lake Ladoga area. The old Valamo became a Soviet military base. Since 1989 the Russian Orthodox Church is trying to reestablish the old Valamo in Lake Ladoga.

Arkeologiksi on elämä heittänyt.

  • @MentheSauvage Shut up! I surely know the borders of my coutry better than you. It is a good old historical Finnish film, I agree, but the map is wrong with wrong borders, if the filming year is 1939. Then what comes your own English, it needs improving too.

  • Wrong map, so what? Please improve your English before you play the besserwisser. Or someone might LOL, like I did... (Main thing someone uploaded this treasure, right?)

  • Those map borders are not the borders of Finland before WWII 1939. Finland was much bigger coutry, one of the largest coutries in Europe what comes land area (with quite small population) We owned half Ladoka Lake, the Karelian Isthmus, South Karelia, Petsamo in North etc. Stalin that Road robber from Georgia robbered and stole those our areas during the WWII when peace came autumn 1944 and then in Paris 1945.

  • Yes, there are monks again on the old site of the monastery, too. Prayer now continues at two places.

  • A great documentary! The monastery was an impressing show of the faith of past generations, and its destruction was a show of the evil of the world. But the monastery still survives at Heinävesi! Where´s your victory, Stalin? You got the buildings, but not the monks.
