I love his guitar tone. Especially when he plays those low notes during the solo. A lot of that sound (maybe not all of it but I say a lot of it) has to do with where and how he holds the pick when he hits those notes. A lot of guitar tone has a lot to do with the way a person plays it. Not all of it, of course, but a lot of it. But where you strum, how hard or soft you strum, how your fingers fret the notes, etc.

Yeah , it seems Page mainly picked closer to the bridge above the bridge pickup. This will give a sharper crisper attacking tone. I think because his Les Paul was worn low, his picking area naturally landed in this zone of the strings.

I had read that Page's Les Paul's had some custom adjustments.

Page always adjusted guitar volume knobs for character he wanted at the moment.

I like Page's tone and guitar sound. There is something raw and crunchy and Earthy about it.

There are a lot of guitarists (mostly after the 70's) who seemed to set knobs at 10. The tone is synthetic sounding to me (ie, not like a guitar) or all effect and no real guitar character.

As far as affecting the tone by where you pick, classical guitarists are experts at this. Picking near the bridge gives a plunky sharp attack and picking further up gives a softer tone.

As Page said, when asked by the BBC about Zeppelin at their peak, when the four of them came together they took on "a fifth element," and were able to "channel" this brilliant music. There is no question that their studies in the Occult became very useful for them.
