In regards to the comments about the Gibson/Fender debate, I think both guitars have their places in the blues (by Gibson, I of course mean the 335). This kind of blues is more suited for the 335 whereas a more aggressive song would call for a strat IMO. For instance I couldn't picture someone like SRV playing a 335, nor could I picture BB King playing a strat.
I think the Les Paul has it's place in blues. Clapton played it on John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, and that was perhaps the most influential record in rock music in terms of guitar playing. All of Clapton's playing on it is pure blues.
i prefer strats, but his style does actually sound so much better with a 335. slightly muddier and blusier. this is the best guitar sound ive heard from him since his cream days
