From the Press Release:

Animals of the Future at MJ Higgins Earth Day 2008

The title of the show is ANIMALS OF THE FUTURE. All wild and exotic animals on our planet are under threat of extinction because of the loss of habitat due to pollution, the warming of the earth's environment, and human population growth. Fragile ecosystems are in serious peril all over the world and will pay a heavy price from the increased storms, floods, and coastal erosion that global warming will produce. What are the critters that will survive the coming catastrophe? They will be the ones that are able to live with or near humans, can live in an urban or semi-urban environment, and will use human garbage as food. These are the "Animals of the Future". They include raccoon, opossum, rats, roaches, crows, owl, coyotes, squirrels, sparrows, pigeons, deer, seagulls, lizards, rabbits, skunk, chipmunks, mice, feral cats, stray dogs, and many other species. The pieces in this show will highlight and tribute these overlooked noble survivors that live sometimes literally in our own backyards.

Treiops Treyfid Artist Statement

Treiops Treyfid's conceptual-based work is defined by relationships between humans, materials and hence, our environment and the ways in which we live. A majority of his current work involves sculpture, installation, mixed media series, and more recently new media performances. In his work, Treyfid builds environs that convey stories of societal norms or abnormalities, economic and political downturns and upswings, mans relationship to animals, consumerism, and in general, human absurdity.

His use of specifically selected materials, which themselves carry relevant and easily accessible meanings, creates social parodies or farces in beautiful, unmistakable ways. Ranging from bulk man-made materials, such as Styrofoam, plastic bags, cardboard and Plexi-glass, to leather, holograms, sound and polyester resin, Treyfid crosses the line between the hand-made and the eco-friendly "green" by blatantly using an excess of these items. Great care is taken to impart a sense of irony without sacrificing the global messages. Contemporary issues that form his work include deforestation, scavenger animals, glamour and identity loss.
