Northern QRA RAF Buchan BIF (Basic Intrim Fit) 1 Squadron 'B' Watch. Think it was filmed in 1986. Only footage I know of the ops room at Buchan. Amazed when I saw it on of 'Cold War jets of the RAF'.

  • Think you mean 43 squadron not 49 squardon (Bomber squardon WWII). Since the scramble is from Buchan to Leuchars. Must be 43 or 111 sqn. Both used FG1 from the Royal Navy. The FGR2 was the ground attack and recon version.

  • I'm sure that the Fighter Controller at Buchan scrambling the QRA is none other than Kate Lacey, a very pretty WRAF Officer whom I worked with at RAF Boulmer in the late 70's and early 80's!

  • 111 Sqn & 43 Sqn used FGR2 until HMS Ark Royal was decommissioned. The FG1 from the navy then went to 111Sqn.

  • God I love the Phantom...

  • Ah writing backwards, one skill I'm glad our trade doesn't have to do anymore!

  • @RAFASOP many apologies, you are right it was of course the"fighting cocks" 43 sqn.you know your stuff.

  • I think this is RAF leuchars as it is an FGR2 of 49 squadron.

  • This takes me back! I was a tech at the Buchan transmitter site at the time....
