Sarah's 10th Ride - Rider Conner, age 12

Sarah is a 7 year old Shagya Arabian mare. She is for sale. Sarah is awesome on the trail, riding in the indoor, or in the outdoor arena. She has been to 2 shows and was very calm and well-mannered. Sarah is approximately 15h. She is extremely smooth to ride and has the perfect disposition for 98% of riders. The video above shows Sarah's 10th ride. Our trainers put 4 rides on her themselves and 12-year-old Conner has done the rest. Both Conner and Sarah deserve a lot of credit.

To start our colts, we jump up on them bareback, rub them all over, and build up to sliding off their tails. We practice yielding to pressure on the ground and longe with a bareback pad. We then do about 1-3 rides bareback and longe the colt in a saddle. We then begin riding with a saddle. We do 1-3 rides just at a walk, then longe at the trot on the longeline so the horse can receive the trot cue from the handler (it makes things simpler for the horse). We then do some trail riding to give our steering some purpose. We spend about 2 weeks practicing collection, extension, and lateral movements at the walk in the arena, trotting some figure 8's and circles long and low as rest breaks from the more complicated walk work. The whole process takes about 8-12 rides. After that, we've got a really nice colt who most people could ride. We add in cantering, jumping, and showing as the horse seems to get bored with things. We believe that when you are training, you are training an emotional state even more than you are training behaviors, so you should focus on picking activities that bring about the emotional state you want. Add in some trail riding if the horse is getting a little pluggish, or do more work riding bareback at a walk if the horse is getting a little hot.
