In the sparsely populated area north of the Magellan Straits in Argentina is the City of Rio Gallegos with a 75cm gauge steam railway bringing coal to the port for shipment to locations the the coast of Argentina.
Steam is the most economical method of operation due to abundant supplies of coal from the Rio Turbio mines in the Andes to the west.
We followed a westbound empties of the 'coal patagonic train' inland for part of the way across this barren region.
There are plans to upgrade and extend this line to Puerto Bories in Chile.
Part of a trip across Chile and Argentina in February 1996, organised by Ffestiniog Travel.

It's wonderful that there are some places that still use steam for every day use and not just for tourist attractions.

Gracias Nickblewitt, a pesar de los errores en las traducciones y aún cuando escribimos un texto y cómo sale editado, hay un imponderable que nos une y es esa mística de los ferrocarriles .

It is Rio Gallegos, not Galagos, refering to the people who came to Argentina when the inmigration, from Galicia, the region in Spain, ca. 1920. The complete name for the city is Río Gallegos (Gallegos River. The train is the coal patagonic train which transport the coal from the Rio Turbio mines over the west, at the Los Andes mountains, up to the east coast in Rio Gallegos where it is dumped into large ships for transporting the coal to some industrial points in Argentina.
