For the first time in history there are more people living in urban areas than in rural areas and the number is expected to double in the next fifty years.

Cities are the drivers of economic expansion, but population growth, migration and other factors such as climate change are exacerbating the problems of city life.

Roughly 10,000 people are attending the World Urban Forum in Nanjing, China next week to determine ways of making city living more harmonious and productive.

How can heartbreaking slums become cleaner, kinder, greener places even as more and more people move to cities?

Thats a key question for policy-makers, development practitioners and non-governmental organizations seeking sustainable solutions to urban dilemmas at the World Urban Forum in Nanjing, China, November 3 to 6.

  • i think i love William Cobbett more than life its self.

  • Development, democracy, urbanization, settling, colonizing = getting people to need/rely on a system. Usurping/crushing their ability to survive on their own. Enslaving them to a manipulated system.

Our true nature is a part of nature. Money, government, corporations, luxuries are superfluous which is why those who have them are more likely to be on Prozac or something.

  • Urbanization means more and more people will be reliant on a system over their own skill & prowess. Many Westerners cannot hunt, sew, build shelter, grow food - the basics of survival. The more the population shifts to cities, the less we can take care of ourselves. We need to move away from cities and globalization & learn basic survival again. We should live in sustainable, relevant villages, growing our own food, bartering and connecting with each other. Starve the government & corporations.
