Despite recent scrutiny of group rides by the City of Long Beach, riders participating in the weekly Saturday morning Velo Allegro bike ride, which departs at 7:30 AM from the Marina near PCH & 2nd Street, regularly blow through 2 stop signs in a row before entering Seal Beach. This is exactly what riders on October 29th were pulled over for.

  • No two Critical Mass rides are alike. They arise from the the local community, and reflect the values and beliefs of the participants. As a community, and as a society, we cannot allow our government to pick and choose which groups are favored, and which groups are not. That is, according to the US Supreme Court, unconstitutional.

  • Big RAT!!!!!!!!!!

  • @85cachete I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Please explain.

  • I know that you feel my singling out the VA ride is unfair, but I did so because past VA president and current City Manager Pat West held it up as one of the 'good' group rides, as opposed to the 'bad' Critical Mass ride. When I witnessed the exact same violations as those cited in the CM ride, I felt that there was a clear double standard at work when it comes to enforcement.

  • oh yeah, and dont even compare a training ride to critical mass....EVERYONE in the video above is required to have a helmet, plus unlike most cutsom fixies they have front and rear brakes, and the riders are responsible adults who aren't out there getting their drinking and smoking and "fighting the system"....haha stupid hipsters, i used to be punk, then i grew up..... way before these whiny artsy douches came around with their toy bikes and started to demand their illegal freedoms.

  • @iidave85ii None of the participants in the Critical Mass ride on October 29th were cited for intoxication, or possession, even though several bikes were partially disassembled in a vain search for contraband. Also, what exactly are 'illegal freedoms?'

  • do you have anything better to do than get aangry at cyclist beacause you have a small penis

  • i firmly believe that all cyclists, and indeed all humans in this world need to be held to the same standards of law, but comparing these two group rides is a complete joke. critical mass is an abomination that is detrimental to all cyclists everywhere, every time that ride rolls out. reckless riding with helmet-less riders on bikes that are usually lacking brakes. a blatant and (key word) vigilante approach to blowing through stop signs in HIGH TRAFFIC areas is what separates these two rides

  • @iidave85ii In my interview with Mr. West, and in statements made by Chief McDonnell, both said that violations of the law by any group ride will not be tolerated. The participants of the Critical Mass ride in question came to a full stop at the first stop sign they encountered, and were waved through by an officer. After riding through the sign as a group, they were all stopped and cited for running the stop sign. The law must be enforced equally for everyone.

  • get a life....i've rode with this group, and they only roll intersections when it's entirely safe , ex: 4 way stops...by the way they never roll through red lights...ps you're a loser for hating on a dedicated training group.
