I answer nrg800's question: "Do you think large carnivorous dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus and Giganotosaurus had feathers? If so, why?"

  • I'm going to have to disagree with your notion of ornithischian quills evolving independently. As we know, the closest relatives of dinosaurs, the pterosaurs, had fine integumentary structures as well (called pycnofibres) and are both classed under the clade Ornithodira. Because of this, we may conclude that the basal members of this clade probably had similarly fine integumentation, but is lost in the larger dinosaurs. But to confirm this, we need to keep digging and scrutinizing our fossils.

  • Very well done!
