  • very curious because i recognize music from polish folklore but steps are others. Tempo is 3/4 = right rythm of polonaise dance. Here they turn closing the paar. In true polish dance, partners are aside and paar is open.

  • Well, Sweden got the "polska" (translation: pole, polish) from Poland a time when Sweden had poles in the castle and such. Then it spread and evolved to what we have today. Its 3/4 but the rythm is on 1 and 3 and not 2 and 3 like waltz and such. I dont know how common this kind of polska is in Poland, but what I've understood the poles bot it from Czech people.

  • As far as I know, the forefathers/mothers of what developed the swedish polska was a popular, courtly dance in 16th century-poland. I think many folkdancers in Sweden are not aware of the multiple european roots of their dances. But the names indicate it. "Engelska": clear. Schottis = Scottish/Schottisch/Ecossaisse = Scottish Waltz. Despite of all those wars and such, europe at some times seems to have been more multinational than it is nowadays... : )

  • @Tompskij Do not misunderstand; you are right 'polka' dance at 2/4 is coming from Czech. But the 'polska' dance at 3/4 I hear here, correspond to the standard 'polonaise' danse walked and not turned in Poland.

(Poland has also 'polka' dance at 2/4 but steps are not walked but a little chassé).

    :-)
