@JohnM3D I had to remove it to make it fit in my small form factor HDD bay. It should be alright as long as you don't mishandle it and wear antistatic gloves.

I have this HDD. I got it with an old eMachines in 2000 I think. I'm still using it today in my new PC. Just popped it and now I this as my primary and the superior Seagate ST3120022A (120 GB) as my secondary drive. According to HDD Health, it is still in excellent condition! The one minus is that it is the slowest drive listed on the Performance Test site... Right at the bottom in terms of performance...lol But that can be expected.

The "latex-rubbery-thing" is actually part of the SeaShield cover that prevents the drive circuitry from being damaged by electrostatic discharge due to mishandling.
