Marijuana that is unregulated/black market could be laced with more addictive drugs like heroin,cocaine,angel dust or anything cheap/dangerous to dilute it.Taxing and regulating it would take it off the black market and be subject to FDA inspections for quality,especially if the tax rate is based on the THC content.

I drink alcohol, yet I think alcohol is a horribly destructive substance when abused. That said, you can take ANYTHING and turn it into a harmful substance / object when abused.

Marijuana is quite possibly the least harmful substance available that can be utilized as a vice, and that is a fact. This isn't about moral reasons; it's about lobbyist power grabbing and monetary gain by government agencies.

Making progress on our youth my ass... I've been smoking since I was 15 and now 16. You have not reduced usage at all amongst youth and decline addiction rates. the only reason that cannabis would be a gateway drug would be that since it is illegal already, a person is forced to associate with the drug underworld/black market where there is also access to harder drugs along with marijuana. if cannabis were legalized then that criminal element would not be needed to associated with.
