Stress is a medical term for a wide range of strong external stimuli, both physiological and psychological, that can cause a physiological response called the General Adap¬tation Syndrome. Stress can have a major impact on the physical functioning of the human body by raising the level of adrenalin and corticosterone.
Stress creates an alarm in the body, and the system must retaliate by releasing certain hormones, such as Cortisol, into the system to control the stress. These hormonal responses create a cascade of responses, all of which are meant to calm down the entire situation. Long-term stress can be a contributing factor to heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.
If the body is responding to stress, then obviously other tasks within the system are either being stopped or slowed down. Therefore, symptoms such as indigestion, headache, gallbladder stress, and increases in heart rate and blood pressure may manifest. One way to control stress is to main¬tain a daily exercise routine, which is crucial to the health of the whole system.
Recommendations include daily exercise, relaxation programs that may include yoga or physical massage and managing and controlling stressful situations.
