This is my rendition of Tatum's classic take on W.C. Handy's St. Louis Blues. The recording can be found on the album "Piano Starts Here" (2nd track). That number, and his versions of Tea for Two and Tiger Rag from the same album, were the first of Tatum's work I ever heard and completely dumbfounded me. I knew immediately that he probably was the greatest pianist who's ever lived and I resolved to learn from him as much as humanly possible. After a lot of work, I've finally managed to play all the way through this piece memorized with only a few bumps and slips, though it only does a little justice to the actual piece. Do yourself a favor and get the album

  • It's definitely not sped up. Check out geoffangus' version of this tune, it's more solid than this.

  • @lightrays i dont see why ppl value classical musicians so highly??? jazz musicians are far more talented and whats more they can swing !!

  • Her father died last July. Christmas had to not be melocloy so Daphne invited a whole crew of us to Dinner. David and I dragged the old Victrola down from the third floor and I was designated DJ. One old bakelite proved my favorite, so the company was compelled to hear it over and over again: Winifred Atwell, St. Louis Blues. Once home I found Bessie Smith, and now foundring. When ever I feel down I play these. It is why it's all called Blues I suppose.
