These are REAL time savers for troubleshooting. The lower the ESR (equivalent series resistance) the better the quality of the cap. An ideal cap woud have 0 ohms ESR. Here's a link to excellent info about ESR testers, and simple explanations of what ESR is.

I service mainly vacuum tube amplifiers, a good quality ESR meter saves so much time, especially not having to unsolder the caps out of the circuit. If you are considering repairs or mods of Hi Fi or pro guitar amps, please email or call me, I'm in L.A. 90260 craigrich2@gmail.com phone# 310 371 9977

I've now included this info in the main description also, along with a good link to ESR details.

  • Ive been considering getting an ESR meter to check caps in vintage tube guitar amps.

    Would you recommend this?

  • I'm pretty damn confused by all this, is a high ESR a good thing or is a low ESR a good thing or does it depend entirely upon what type of capacitor you are testing? How do you know what is an acceptable level for a each different type of Capacitor you test? I recently bought a Peak Atlas Component Analyzer which gives me Capacitance and the ESR level in Ohms but!?? I had one Capacitor on a Main Board for an LCD Monitor give out a level of 63 ESR and another that gave out only 2 ESR. Help!
