This video will help Millennial learners, who have grown up with the advantages of Google and Wikipedia, understand the value of setbacks when doing research in a database. You can also view this video in higher quality streaming at http://vimeo.com/mluhtala/videos.

It demonstrates how to use secondary sources to identify keywords that will help locate primary sources.

It also highlights the importance of using the lexicon of the era, rather than contemporary search terms when trying to locate primary sources.

PS for students: Lima is in Peru, not Chile! I included the article because the transitional government between full-on colonialism and independence was housed in Lima, and the article was relevant.

  • As you could guess, the NCHS Library has changed since Miss Virginia Lord was librarian in 1954 when I arrived to become English Department Chairman. She worshipped 3x5 cards. Jerry Renjilian brought in computers. But I have just shared the above URL with 200 or so retirees, and I'm sure they will be nonplussed at what now happily is going on (although many won't know what a pdf is or how .doc differs from .pages As the only faculty member who ever shook hands with John Dewey, I'm impressed!
