J.S. Bach - Cantata BWV 180 "Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele"

Conductor Helmuth Rilling gives a lecture on the Cantata, utilizing the orchestra and soloists of the day for musical demonstrations.

from June 1984 at the Oregon Bach Festival

in this segment, Rilling finishes talking about he opening chorus "Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele"

then covers the motifs in the tenor aria "Ermuntre dich: dein Heiland klopft" (that funny "klopft" movtif!), and fine bit of singing by tenor Adelbert Kraus.

next, the soprano Recitative And Chorale "Wie teuer sind des heilgen Mahles Gaben!" is covered, with fine singing by Arleen Augér.

finally, Rilling discusses alto Recitative "Mein Herz fühlt in sich Furcht und Freude" with Judith Malafronte singing.

  • I had the privilege of being in the chorus that demonstrated during one of his lectures. The man is pure genius.
