LAST PERFORMANCES NEXT WEEK!
The play's focus is directed on the complex relation between art and politics, the artist and society as well as the relation between Europe and the U.S. Harwood modelled the play on the post-war trial against the exceptionally gifted German conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler. Although courted by the Nazis as outstanding artist and cultural figurehead of international reputation during the Third Reich, Furtwängler always considered himself apolitical.
After the war, he was accused of being a follower of the Nazi regime by an American GI due to his relations to leading figures of the Third Reich and his position as vice president of the Reichsmusikkammer.
What bothers me about this play - and the film - is that Furtwangler helped over a hundred people either escape Europe or helped them survive the war. This is not mentioned. The other problem is that he was NEVER put on trial or abused by American authorities. The Patton-esque Col. Arnold figure seems to be a fiction created by a playwright who seems to hate Germans AND Americans.

I think it's really amazing to see what a shadow can do on my face to make the expression even more dramatic.
Thanks for this :)

Wish I could be in Dresden to see it.
Every time I see the film it makes my insides want to explode. Furtwangler's an idol of mine.
The musician, not the man. Aha! But is that an ethical distinction?
But to listen to the music...I mean, my God.
Thanks for posting this.
