If you know where and when to look, it is actually possible to see the International Space Station as it passes over your community.
This video is a short guide to finding and observing the ISS. Viewing times for your location can be found at http://www.heavens-above.com .
This activity supports the astronomy component of any science program.

  • great video.. I love watching the sky!

Any object in orbit has to have a velocity of at least 17500 MPH to stay there, if it goes slower than that the Earths gravity will pull it back down. Hope this helps.

  • you can also go to NASA.GOV/station/sightings it will display the same data

  • Why dont we have a shipyard in space and a space station on the moon or in orbet?

Why do we wast money on war in 3 world countrys and shit when we can go to fucking space?

  • We are not suppose to build spacestation in space. This is forbidden. Its in Holy Bible.

You mankind have been warned. Prepare for chastisement.

  • @eorhan05 well it may have been the ISS, but there are countless other satellites that are visible from earth with the naked eye, any of which could have been the one you saw

  • impretty sure i saw it during the last week when the moon was rising ..it was a dot at first moving fast then got really bright when near the moon then it faded ..but with the naked eye i could see the double solar panels..i didnt know what it looked like until i just watched this ...so i guess im right...would i have seen it again in 92 minutes?

  • i saw it.

  • it passed over my house when the last shuttle was docked. i saw it online, but it was cloudy!

  • I live in Sweden and have seen the MIR and the ISS (plus dozens of satellites over the years). Once I even saw the ISS and a shuttle at the same time. I knew that the shuttle had recently undocked from the ISS and went out to look. Then I saw two bright stars sailing away, close to each other, above the horizon. A great sight!

  • last summer, I was not sleeping during the nights and just observing the sky with naked eyes. The Sun was about to rise, but it was twilight. Then I looked at the sky for the last time to go to bed; and suddenly I realized an airplane going, then I realized it doesnt look like an airplane it looks like a celestial body. I was so excited and it looked like a star moving with a high velocity. I went to the internet immediately and checked that it was the ISS !
