A leader of the group, Spencer County Citizens For Quality of Life, Mr. Chuck Botsko addressed the crowd assembled at the Air Permit hearing conducted by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management in Rockport, IN on January 25.
Botsko made numerous points that were germane to the permit.
Indiana Gasification (see other related videos on this page) wants to build a coal to syngas plant in Rockport using both a $2 billion + Federal Loan Guarantee as well as having to rely on legislation passed a few years back that requires Indiana's residential gas consumers to incur the enormous risk of the facility since the cost of production of the syngas is about two to three times as high as the current cost to buy natural gas.
The project also requires that a pipeline be built from the Gulf of Mexico to the plant to dispose of its millions of tons of CO2 the coal to gas process will produce. WHo will pay of the pipeline is still in question although so far, taxpayers and ratepayers are the entities that are on the hook for most of the project's tremendous cost.
