They do the song as a comedy for a movie "toto" in 1958. The song had been a big hit that swept the world 2 years before.. They instantly knew it would be a famous hit. In their performance here they act crazy--but they did it on purpose and the true orginal recording of the song is very impressive and much slower. Also they removed the verse about "making love under the moon" Pink Louder uses that verse but it isnt sung in this stage performance for the movie. It was removed because of being too suggestive..

@1120gabby Actually whats considered the more modern version--is really pink louder or others taking and mixing clips of Carosone --but also others singing in the present. The result is a mix that means nothing such as "papa americano" nobody every said papa americano at all. the true original from 1956 is a masterpiece--but this video also captures Carosone in his prime--performing their most famous but in a strange comedy version...i tunes has the original from 1956--no ukeles...

Specifically for Italy, I can tell you that the Italian language has different ways to say "I love you", resulting a lot passionate and engaging (over particular ways very special if you speak dialect, for example dialect Neapolitan or Sicilian).

In addition there is the problem of sound.

It 'a bit hard to explain ... but the Italian language has a type of sound that interfaced with accents dialect (accent, not words) is very particular and very, very expressive.

Im pretty sure I understand--in the song the person would be saying "i love you" in english--to act american. But that would be like me trying to impress a spanish woman by saying i love you in spanish---in other words basically making a fool of themselves....

Oh...you're very kind. unfortunately my english is crappy, but I'll try to give an explanation.

And yes, actually tell I love you in english or foreign language would be an unusal thing for an italian. It's possible could happen rarely, but in a somewhat playful.

What mean "I love you" in the various languages the world is quite well known, but I think in specific moments (which are also full of instinct) is natural for anyone to use the mother tongue.
