It's tedious to explain the evolution of popular culture and how there was a time when people did in fact think there was a "Communist menace." This is Joe Friday delivering one of his lectures which were a standard part of the show. I'd say it was aimed at the John Birch Society.

Dragnet was an idealistic show about an America that never existed,what has all of this idealism done for us...overun with illegal invaders,bankrupt from fighting other people's wars,a government so corrupt its about to fall in on itself....nice talk Joe...but in the real world you had better know who your enemies are or its your ass.

There are many reasons I am a devoted fan of "Dragnet." This is one of them: Joe Friday is a hard-ass. He calls 'em as he sees 'em, and he takes no stuff off lawbreakers. But he not a blind right-wing "let's kill 'em all" knucklehead, either. Especially in the 60s shows, he always expressed sensitivy (if that's the right word) for those who happen not to look, or think, like him. Joe shows you can be both by the book, and by the soul. Book 'em, Joe!
