If we had portal back in the 1980s, imagine how good our games would be today.

I'm not sure. We can't really do much more to our games nowadays. Games are beginning to look realistic as real life, and the gameplay is getting better too. I think gaming is getting pretty close to it's peak in performance. After that, sure, you can make things go faster, run smoother, store more data, but those are just minor upgrades. We won't have another revolutionary exponential advancement in technology like we had from the 80's to 2000.

Well you could then incorporate more and more into those minor upgrades such as advanced physics (extremely realistic body shredding) or advanced graphics. I hear Uncharted 2 is pushing the PS3 to the max and personally, I think it could be way better. Plus, VR is now a huge thing that people are trying to make. We may get rid of actual controllers and have mind control headsets or something similar.

Well yeah, but things really aren't going to advance exponentially like from the 80's to 2000. We went from 8-bit to nearly realistic graphics. Music went from beeps to fully orchestrated soundtracks. Gameplay went from a button and a joystick to wireless controllers with buttons to control every limb on a person, lol.
We're not going to see that kind of rapid advancement again in gaming. Yes, it's going to keep getting better, but the advancements may be un-noticeably minor.
