Oklahoma University Quarterback: 1973-75
Orange Bowl Appearance (1): 1976
Oklahoma University quarterback Steve Davis was one of the most successful college football quarterbacks ever. A three-year starter, Davis began his tenure as Oklahomas quarterback in 1973 with first year head coach Barry Switzer. After a 7-7 tie against Southern Cal in his second career game, Davis led the Sooners to 28 consecutive victories.
Following the 1975 season, the second-ranked Oklahoma Sooners entered the 1976 Orange Bowl against the Michigan Wolverines in control of their own destiny for a national championship, after No. 1 Ohio State was upset in the Rose Bowl by UCLA earlier in the day. Oklahoma was protecting a 7-0 lead entering the fourth quarter when Davis scored on a10-yard scamper to increase the Sooners lead to 14-0. Oklahoma would beat Michigan, 14-6, for its fifth national championship and Davis was named the Orange Bowls Offensive Most Valuable Player.
Davis was a duel threat quarterback for the Sooners, providing big plays with his arm and legs. During his three year career, he accumulated 4,160 yards of total offense, with 2,124 yards coming on the ground and 2,036 yards from the air. Davis had 11 100-plus yard rushing games and 34 of his 55 touchdowns came on the ground. Davis holds the Oklahoma school record for most wins by a quarterback with 32, and his 34 starts are tied for first all-time in consecutive starts by a quarterback in school history.
Davis and the Sooners were dominant against their major rivals. Oklahoma was a combined 6-0 against Nebraska and Texas during Davis time as starting quarterback. Davis left Norman with a career record of 32-1-1, three Big 8 Championships and two national championships.
