So what was the point of the Great Leap Forward if all the steel was useless? What was Mao trying to achieve by turning productive farms into makeshift steel complexes? Why not just train professionals and make as much as steel as you needed by converting the farms with weaker productivity into steel mills?

Mao refuted his own ideas by trying to put them into practice. No man should ever be given as much power as he gave himself. He'll only make a mess of things.

millions died in the west's great leap forwards too.... otherwise known as industrial revolutions. 2 in 5 children were not expected to live to 5. Notice how they never mention this on TV? ;) dosent make the failure of GLF any different but more people need to realise this.

@gmichaelz mao is viewed as a hero because even though he made mistakes, he gave the people better lives than they originally had. the majority of the people at least. he was had brilliant ideas, but didnt know how to put them into action and made mistakes. but when you make mistakes at that level, it costs lives. he is viewed as a hero simply because he unified the country and is a war hero, not because of his economic decisions and not because people are forced to think so.

@thatkindofguy234 A leader can make mistakes, bad programs, but an honest leader stop his reforms inmediately. Mao insisted in his policy for years. Reports of death meant nothing for arrogant, cruel communist leaders

@locheedode the people there are not allowed to think otherwise. He did unite China and there were few other statesman to consider a "hero" In Taiwan they used to have Chang Kai Shek statues everywhere to form some kind of national identity. However as time has gone on Chang is remembered for being a gangster and a poor leader. Taiwan's identity will grow with time as a democracy. I suspect as the CCP losses more power Mao will be viewed with mixed feelings.
