    Anne Rice, whom the author of the Southern Vampire Mysteries rips off liberally, absolutely intended for vampires to be a metaphor for gays. Anne Rice created the modern vampire mythos as we know it today. Before her no one had written from the vampires point of view. The loneliness, the feelings of being an outsider and being shunned by society for being something that isnt your fault. These are all metaphors for the gay condition.
