How do you get the quick disconnect part off, because I've tried a couple times now and it's just rounding the ends and I'm afraid to keep doing it and ruining my hose. Any suggestions?

Use a pair of vice grips. You'll mar up the "nut", but it's about the only way. After you've taken it off one time, don't use loc-tite on it. Use teflon tape (plumber's tape) to seal the threads.

can a slide check come off in the middle of playing and mess you up?

Properly installed, such an issue is pretty much impossible.

whats the point of the teflon tape?

If you do not put teflon tape or other sealant (such as Loc-Tite), you will have air leaking constantly through the threading. I use teflon tape to ensure a seal, yet not make it too difficult to remove when I do maintenance.
