I have thought since I first heard this song back in 1995 that this is one of the two or three best songs Michael Card has ever written, but have thought if he'd just wait a little bit after he asks each question to allow the listener to ponder for a moment it might even have a greater impact. That's what I have tried to address with this arrangement.

Also, the setting was not planned. It "just happened" that when I was ready to record it, the sun was shining through my living room window onto that certain spot on my couch. I didn't notice until after I was finished recording that the cross bars in the window were forming the shadow of a cross on my face as I was singing.

Why did it have to be a friend
Who chose to betray the Lord?
Why did he use a kiss to show them?
That's not what a kiss is for.

Only a friend can betray a friend,
A stranger has nothing to gain.
And only a friend comes close enough
To ever cause so much pain.

And why did there have to be a thorny
Crown pressed upon His head?
It should have been a royal one
Made of jewels and gold instead.

It had to be a crown of thorns
Because in this life that we live
For all who seek to love, A thorn
is all the world has to give.

And why did it have to be
A heavy cross He was made to bear?
And why did they nail His feet and hands?
When his love would have held Him there.

It was a cross for on a cross
A thief was supposed to pay.
And Jesus had come into the world
To steal every heart away.

Jesus had come into the world
To steal every heart away.

  • nice! what 4 cords do you use!

  • Actually I used five chords all together. Em D Em D Em D Em D Em9 C Em9 C D G D Em B7 Em D Em D Em9 C Em9 C D Em ...

  • "When his love would have held Him there."

It's off the subject, but... This phrase reminded me that our love for our spouse should keep us together when times get rough. We cannot rely on our emotions or our feelings. The passion can fizzle out, but sacrificial love continues. We must rely on Christ-like love, as depicted here.

  • Truly, love is a decision, not something you do just because you always feel like it.
